Diana Hosts Methuen, North Andover Senior Centers at State House

Diana hosted a tour of the Massachusetts State House for the Methuen and North Andover Senior Centers on Tuesday, July 16.

More than 40 residents of the senior centers participated in the visit, as they toured both the State House and State Library, gathered for a photo atop the building’s Grand Staircase and spoke with area lawmakers over coffee and pastries.

Joining Diana with the seniors were State Senators Bruce E. Tarr (R-Gloucester) and Kathleen O’Connor-Ives (D-Newburyport) and State Representatives Linda Dean Campbell (D-Methuen) and Frank A. Moran (D-Methuen).

“I spent all of last year door-knocking and visiting with residents in the district, so I thought it’d be fun to host them here at the State House,” said Diana. “While we were able to discuss issues of serious concern, we were also able to have good times, given all of the extra joy the seniors brought in their visit. They brightened up my day.”

“I’ve never been to the State House before, so this is quite an experience,” said visitor June McDonald. “This place is so big, I imagine I’d get lost in it on my own.”

“Over the years, I’ve visited Boston all the time, but I never got around to coming to the State House,” said visitor Frank Stallone. “This was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

Massachusetts School Building Authority and Officials Meet for Hunking School

Diana met with Haverhill Officials and the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) to discuss plans to build a new school in Bradford that would replace the current Hunking Middle School. The current middle school recently underwent repairs after it was deemed structuraly unstable, however these repairs are only meant to be a short-term fix. According to the Eagle Tribune, the new school could cost an estimated 62 million dollars and would be funded through higher taxes under a ‘debt exclusion’ clause, which would essentially raise property taxes until the project has been paid off.

Diana said about the project that “I’ve talked to residents, students, and teachers and they all want a new building. Being from Methuen, I’ve been trying to find out as much as I can about this so I can make an informed decision when the time comes.”

The MSBA has assigned a Designer Selection Panel (DSP) which consists of 13 appointed members and three representatives of the local city, town or regional school district. The city of Haverhill has indicated that the three representatives will be James Fiorentini (Mayor), James Scully (Superintendent of Schools), and Paul Magliocchetti (School Committee Member).
